In this painting workshop, we will explore abstract painting using collage as primary means of construction. Through intensive studio work students explore the possibilities of painting, working with collage to respond to perceptual experiences and conceptual ideas. The studio will become a place of inquiry utilizing various methods to affect the outcome and the aesthetic and visual reality of painting; for example, simplification of form, flattening of space, imaginary color, etc. Studio activity will be informed by presentations, discussions and critiques. The goal is to create sophisticated paintings using collage to generate, inform, and support them.

Collage is a technique of art production where the work is made from an assemblage of different forms and materials. When introduced in the visual arts, collage was a great disruptor to established conventions and thus provided an opportunity for artists to reshape and reinvent the objects they made. Following this precedent, the studio will become a laboratory for new forms and ways of thinking.
