In this workshop we will explore the fascinating world of self-portraiture through the lens of collage and assemblage.
Self-portraits take on a countless number of manifestations: they can be realistically drawn or painted, they can be an emotional, non-realistic expression of yourself, you can simplify your self-portrait into what you feel are your most essential elements, or make a montage of different aspects of yourself without ever including your actual face in the image.
Collage can be defined as seemingly different parts coming together to make a whole. Fabric, pieces of paper, photographs, letters, newspaper clippings, string, or found materials can be used to make a collage. You can draw, print, sew, transfer clippings or photographs onto a collage. Really anything can be used to make a collage! When working in this way, materials that we typically think cannot co-exist do something very interesting visually when placed together, leading to a space that is dynamic and revealing.
Explore both worlds of self-portraiture and collage to amplify particular elements or energies of yourself and your story, enjoying a dance between chaos and control.
