Learn the basics of carving and shaping with hand tools; gouges, rasps, files, spokeshaves, block planes, knives, and more. Through demonstrations and prompts, explore both traditional and contemporary carving techniques and learn how they can be applied to the making of furniture and functional objects.

This workshop is a module in the course Applied Techniques in Furniture Design. Students can sign up for individual modules or the full class as a three credit class. Limited space is available in both the full semester class and the workshops.

Ellen Adams

Ellen Adams is an object maker and woodworker based in Boston, MA. They create functional sculptures that celebrate beauty and utility. Adams is an alum of Massachusetts College of Art and Design and has since worked as a teaching assistant, technician, manager and teacher at various woodshops in the Greater Boston area.
