Introduction to Basket Weaving

This workshop will focus on creating forms using two traditional basket weaving techniques: random weave and twining. Random weave toes the line between order and chaos, and twining uses spirals to create a multitude of forms and patterns. These techniques are a solid basis for basket weaving, and translates well across materials and scales. Students will walk away with the knowledge needed to create a vessel fit for a fine art gallery, or to weave their own backyard willow dome. We’ll go over starting and finishing techniques, terminology, material selection and prep, and how to manipulate these weaving techniques beyond their baseline. The emphasis of this workshop is to get a good understanding of the basic rules of weaving, so that students can feel comfortable building upon them (or breaking them) as they please!
