Blue velvet, yellow gingham checks, red satin, and so many more textiles are a playground for our eyes. The folds and shapes created by draped cloth can provide a sense of a particular light environment; painting draped cloth is a superb way to develop the ability to respond to value and color. We will paint cloth by itself and as ingredient in still life. We will also work with color independent of form to create our own pattern designs. Looking at images in which painters, historical and contemporary, have used fabric will enhance our work.

This class is open to people with some or a lot of painting experience. Oil, gouache or acrylic are the preferred mediums.

This course is part of MassArt New England summer workshops, where participants immerse themselves in full days of studio work with faculty and peers. Housing is available for participants of this program.
